Romania: Valentine’s Day traditions from around the world

For much of history, instead of Valentine’s Day, Romanians celebrated Dragobete on February 24th. A mythological creature similar to Cupid, Dragobete was a handsome man who frequently indulged in love affairs. Those who participate in this day’s celebrations are said to be protected from sickness for the rest of the year. Participants typically meet in the center of the village to sing and play games.
