    Joe remembers the days in the North when, as a young bush pilot, he could trade a bag of oranges and a head of lettuce for accommodation because fresh produce was sparse. Today his airline, Buffalo Airways, supplies the North with fresh produce by the planeload. But the northern aviation legend faces increased scrutiny from Transport Canada. He’s reluctant to let go of the reins, let alone retire. This season, Joe lets the McBryan kids take charge of pieces of the company, turns a young 70, and flies DC-3 WZS recreating the D-Day jumps of 70 years ago. Close

Working with a team of northern mechanics, he’s kept Buffalo’s planes flying. This season, Rod moves up the ranks at Buffalo from mechanic to Accountable Executive and finds that running an airline ain’t easy. Close

    Buffalo Joe’s only daughter, Kathy, manages Buffalo’s Hay River office. Every morning before the daily sked departs, Kathy shares a coffee with her father while checking in passengers. Kathy’s influence on Joe is huge, and to move up from Hay River ramp hand to co-pilot, the Hay River rampies know that she’s the one they need to impress. This season, Kathy contends with some rampie rebellion and helps Mikey search for a birthday present for Joe’s 70th. Close

    This calm and collected captain worked his way up the ranks at Buffalo from rampie to Chief Pilot, succeeding Justin Simle and Arnie Schreder. AJ flies every Buffalo plane from the DC-3 to the new Electra. This former Maritimer has put down his roots firmly in the North—even getting married in an Ice Castle. This year, AJ battles the rough winds up the Mackenzie Valley, checks out two new co-pilots on the DC-3 and flies to the remote hamlet of Holman, NWT to deliver a strange item to a Mountie. Close

    Longtime turboprop captain Brian is Buffalo’s hired gun on the Electra. It’s becoming clear that the Electra is the new workhorse at Buffalo; it’s faster, bigger and more complex, and Brian is the perfect captain to train new Electra pilots. This year Brian goes down to Red Deer with Joe to try to bring back Buffalo’s new UK Electra ZFE that’s been sitting in a snowbank. He and Joe have to de-ice the plane on their hands and knees…just for starters. Close

    Co-pilot Chris Staples enjoys flying the Buffalo’s Curtis Commando C-46, but since the Electra has begun flying up the Valley there hasn’t been that much C-46 flying…so Chris begins working as an apprentice mechanic. Chris believes working up north, flying in remote locations and knowing how to fix his own plane can be a big benefit for a Buffalo pilot. This year, Chris organizes a trip to California to compete against his fellow Buffalo employees in an epic aerial dogfight. Close

    Jeff Tapper started his career at Buffalo with a bang. He was aboard the daily DC-3 Sked flight last summer when the DC-3 made a crash landing. Luckily for Jeff, his years as a flight attendant for Air Canada helped him safely instruct passengers in the emergency. This year, Jeff battles an ice storm in Hay River, gets checked out on the DC-3, masters his landings and flies the historic DC-3 CUE with Joe. Close

    New rampie Prefkar has a strange story of how he ended up at Buffalo. He met Joe at a gas station in Red Deer and Joe gave him a job right on the spot.  Prefkar left his life in India to pursue his pilot dreams and has now flown Buffalo's legendary war-era DC-3. This season Prefkar gets a taste of just how cold life in the North can get with minus 40 temperatures, battles an ice storm in Hay River, learns to skate and gets a chance to fly the DC-3. Close

    Known for being a wrench-wizard on the CL-215, this year Cory is adding a new flight path to his résumé—flight engineer on the Electra. This means he'll have to learn all about the notoriously complicated electrical aircraft. On one of his training flights, Cory battles crosswinds up the Mackenzie Valley and lands on ice runways up in Holman, NWT. But Cory is still a mechanic, so he’s thrilled when Mikey tells him that he wants to retrofit DC-3 WZS for a military jump. Cory’s grandfather was a paratrooper in the Second World War and Cory leaps at a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to tandem jump out of DC-3 WZS with Mikey to commemorate the 70th anniversary of D-Day.     A mechanical genius, Chuck is also grumpy, outspoken and foul-mouthed. He seems to belong with the oil spewing, fire-breathing engines at Buffalo, where he's worked on-and-off for 16 years. This year, Chuck has a "bad feeling" as a newly overhauled C-46 takes off for its test flight. When the plane collapses on the runway upon landing, it sends the entire Buffalo crew scrambling. Chuck blames himself but has to rebound to get Buffalo's wounded bird back flying. And he soon gets a chance to take a shot on an NHL goalie – if he can stay upright on skates. Close
