Knightfall factoid: Origins of the Templar’s Name

The full name of the Knights Templar is The Poor Fellow-Soldiers of Christ and of the Temple of Solomon.

The Temple of Solomon, also known as The First Temple, was constructed in 970 BC and built for King Solomon himself, according to the Hebrew Bible, though historians contest its existence. But since the Temple was destroyed in 587 BC by Nebuchadnezzar II, the Templar never stepped foot in the Temple of Solomon.

Since the Templar’s headquarters were in Temple Mount, given to them as a haven for pilgrims, they resided in the Al Aqsa Mosque, supposedly built over the ruins of The Temple of Solomon, giving the Knights their name.

Knightfall premieres Wednesday, December 6 at 10 EP only on HISTORY.
