August 9, 1945 – The United States drops an atomic bomb on Nagasaki.

On this day in 1945, Nagasaki becomes the second and, to date, last city to be hit by an atomic bomb. Just three days earlier, the Japanese city of Hiroshima was the first city hit, killing about 30% of the city’s population. One of the largest seaports in southern Japan, Nagasaki was extremely important due to its massive industrial production of war equipment.
