Holland – Road to Liberation
In April 1945 Canadian troops were in a vicious battle against strong German opposition as they moved through Northern Holland on they’re way to liberating the Dutch. The War Junk team’s objective is to tell the story of liberation through any artifacts they find. They first investigate the area near the town of Groningen where one of the bloodiest urban battles took place near the end of the war. In a local museum they discover a helmet from a Canadian soldier killed on the streets of the city. The Team investigates, searching for any clues with regards to the story of soldier and a rare photo taken of him just after he was killed. They also uncover a second helmet of a Padre who survived the war but left his kit behind. This emotional ‘tale of the two helmets’ makes this War Junk episode very special as family members come to Holland for the first time to walk in the footsteps of their loved ones. The Team also gets to dig on the site of a former Prisoner of War Camp and find unique and rare artifacts buried for 70 years.
